Howard Hawks at Melbourne Cinémathèque

…This post will only be of interest to Melbourne readers. Melbourne Cinémathèque is holding a season of 1930s Howard Hawks films this month, including three of his aviation classics: Only Angels Have Wings, Ceiling Zero (both on Wednesday, 3 December) and The Dawn Patrol (Wednesday, 17 December). They’re showing at ACMI. I don’t think I’ve seen any of them so I’ll probably be there! Thanks to Cathy for the tip. Image source: Wikipedia….

It’s intended primarily for the Bed & Breakfast market, but we’ve rarely had a problem, and it generally works well – you can specify your budget and where you are aiming to stay. The TI staff are knowledgeable about their local market, and in my experience (having worked with one team) very professional – you get the benefits of local knowledge. Just a suggestion,…

He also used “Tong-Way” – His occupation upon enlistment was given as “High School Teacher” and his address as “The Manse” Young St., Ballarat East, Victoria. – His father was Reverend John Tong-Way. – In 1966 he made application for repatriation benefits, apparently on the basis of his WWI service. – H…

…n at the moment.) You’ve reminded me that I came across — then lost — an online translation of a German underground (presumably Communist) pamphlet which used the “Getafe” photos. The bombing-of-civilians theme was certainly picked up far and wide, not just in Britain and the US. Ians: Stradling does explore those sorts of links (also the Basque refugee children and so on). In fact he begins with the Manic Street Preachers because it was their s…

Added the link, and I see The Territorial in the Next War is also online now. Interestingly, that lists different authors for the never-published Infantry in the Next War and The Civilian in the Next War, which may explain why they never came out (along with the war)….

But the Antikythera mechanism is always the anachronism which floors me the most.
