I heartily recommend Ian Patterson, Guernica and Total War, which has just been published by Profile Books and will be out soon in the USA from Harvard. It is a wonderfully concise and intelligent account of the broader topics of airmindedness, frightfulness and so on, as well as the Guernica bombing itself. Excellent on the importance of the lie in all this.
